Clare’s East Coast Delicatessen SAY WHAT?
Mike just sent us this hot tip that there is an east coast deli opening up at 17th and Guerrero. All I know is that “East coast style fun” better involve slamming back cases of Harpoon UFO and watching Irish people have fist fights.

November 5, 2009 at 9:38 am
kevin, please. any real new englander knows that harpoon ufo is a drink for the overeducated elite. real irish bostonians drink harp, or, more realistically, mickey’s.
November 5, 2009 at 9:48 am
UFO is fucking delicious. That said, I went to Brandeis so that comment probably makes sense.
November 5, 2009 at 4:23 pm
Kevin: If you went to Brandeis, you must know that ‘East Coast’ is coded language for JEW….

I’ll one up your “overeducated elite harpoon ufo” and request a Smuttynose, thanks.
While I’m at it, basketball on the big screen, and popcorn from the bar, and drunken irish men hugging each other and singing Queen songs in the back of a bar that looks like your mother’s basement in the midwest a la Razzy’s. If anyone has any idea what I’m talking about, please email me to reminisce.
November 5, 2009 at 10:18 am
i hope they have cheez wiz. (is philly even in new england? it all seems like one big old-timey museum to me.)
November 5, 2009 at 10:35 am
Cheez Whiz on a cheesesteak is disgusting. The only places in Philadelphia that actually use that stuff are tourist traps anyhow.
I’m assuming your geography question is a joke, but if not…Philadelphia is technically in the mid-Atlantic region, along with DC and Baltimore.

Balmer, that land of pleasant living.
November 5, 2009 at 8:33 pm
Whoa….that’s def. not true.
November 6, 2009 at 9:10 am
uh, yeah, it is. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/National_Bohemian
November 5, 2009 at 10:35 am
East Coast style deli. What part of that has anything to do with new england or the irish??? East Coast Style Deli to me, immideatly means new york. as in, rye bread, egg and cheese, black and white cookies.
and uh, no drunken fights. its a deli people.
November 5, 2009 at 10:49 am
yeah, what does new england have to do w/ deli’s?
I’m hoping for a katz deli west coast – i would trade half the taquerias and most of our farmers markets for an ‘east coast’ deli that is half as good as katz.
November 5, 2009 at 10:50 am
It’s next to the 500 Club and will be much-needed fuel for boozehounds. I plan on supporting the venue…I can only hope it’s fare and attitude are in direct juxtaposition to that ridiculous hipster-powered joint, “Ike’s”.
November 5, 2009 at 11:03 am
dude I agree about Ike’s. Every time I see his mom, in her chador, and all his friends who he grew up with in the city who he employs, i’m like, die! you fucking hipsters.
November 5, 2009 at 11:10 am
the people at Ike’s are hipsters? fuck, you goons like to drop that word a lot…
November 5, 2009 at 12:44 pm
sigh… i wish my keyboard had one of these:

People who smile and dance around to Snoop Dogg from 1998 aren’t h-word’s, that is just a good time. Olu, I think you need a hug a a “Forty” on dutch crunch.
November 5, 2009 at 2:05 pm
Irony mark noted. Martini Rossi needs the hug and I will be getting myself the Forty.
November 5, 2009 at 11:41 am
The definition of the word lines up there daily for sandwiches. Why is it that the smaller the place is (Yamo, also) the more hipsters like to cram themselves into it?
November 5, 2009 at 12:10 pm
The irish are not known for their deli’s, east coast or west. the poster referencing NYC and katz’s comes closer. let’s face it: “east coast” is a euphemism for Jewish. if it’s a real jewish deli, than the mission will be soooo enhanced by it’s presence. however, the very fact that they feel they have to say “east coast” and that it’s called “claires” and not “mandelbaum’s” leaves me skeptical.

Clare is the name if the owner you twat.
November 5, 2009 at 3:30 pm
yar there’s arpo in me harpoon
November 5, 2009 at 3:41 pm
It must be true. The experts said so in the Mission Mission comments.
November 5, 2009 at 6:18 pm
Where is this exactly? Did the caning place close? Not that I ever needed caning but still.
November 6, 2009 at 4:14 am
Yes it’s replacing the caning place. Ouch!! No more canings!
November 6, 2009 at 12:48 am
East-coast, shmeast-coast — there’s more decent delis in Los Angeles than San Francisco has seen in generations. Just tell me I can get a corned beef on fresh rye with sauerkraut, a block away from my apartment, and I’ll be a happy fella.
And it should be wrapped in paper, not plastic.
November 6, 2009 at 9:59 am
Give the place a chance…I gave Ike’s a couple tries…the food was not bad at all, but it’s blown up way beyond warrant….lines like that are ridiculous.
November 6, 2009 at 3:26 pm
Oh come on. It’s not so bad – If you walk in it’s not like they can ignore your phone call. It’s like, hello, I’m standing right here, watching you watching the phone ring…
Why, the other Sunday when I was there I only had to wade through, like, two packs of Spirits and maybe 3 or 4 hundred bros before I got my sando. It wasn’t easy looking really cool for that long without a craft-brew inhand, but by the time I was done Benders was totally open for business.
November 7, 2009 at 1:09 pm
Ahh, the irony of KevMo getting excited about a place that hasn’t opened yet. I hope this doesn’t become a meme.
But one LA-quality jewish deli in SF would be very welcome.
November 7, 2009 at 5:03 pm
Harpoon IPA I miss dearly, maybe they can smuggle it into the state
November 14, 2009 at 3:16 am
hey hungry kids…I’m so happy to see you are all so ready for a good reuben, or meatball grinder, and it’s on it’s way…I’m gonna say we will be sharing corned meats by the new year!
Sandwich ideas always welcome at http://www.claresdeli.com/contact_us
with everything,
clare…….
