El Rio Turns 31

Broke-Ass Stuart alerts us to El Rio‘s 31st anniversary party.  Tonight at 8 p.m. and free!

“Bands/Dj’s, BBQ, Games and You!”, their website reads.

Happy birthday to this neighborhood institution!

  1. This would be a fun trivia subject for Burrito Justice or someone similarly dedicated to RESEARCH — if I’m not mistaken El Rio was briefly a gay bar, way back in the day. And it managed to transcend that and become an everybody bar. Granted, depending on the night of the week, some bodies more than others.

  2. While I don’t know what it was a few decades back, I can tell you that between the 20s and the 50s it was a bar, right in the middle of a bunch of car dealerships and auto repair shops.

At the turn of the previous century a “harness and carriage trimming” shop was on the site.

And in the 1880s it was an empty lot and some dude’s house and a glove factory were next door.
