Dolores Park To Close Next Year, For Over A Year

Uptown Almanac reports:

Nicolas King, an aide to Supervisor Dufty, has confirmed that Dolores Park will be “entirely closed during its renovation.”

This renovation is expected to begin some time between August and December of 2011 and last for most of a year and a half. Link.

  1. A radical notion: half the park one winter/spring, the other half the next solstice/equinox? Otherwise PBR and Strauss ice cream base might spill in the streets.

  2. In the time it takes this city to upgrade sidewalks along one street, other cities have built entire record-breaking superstructures. If it says the park will be closed for 18 months, it will be closed for at least 32 months. This has the curiously convenient effect of killing off the bothersome problem of people actually using the park. Assinine solution to a simple problem. Oh yeah, what about that soccer field that was a total bust? What happens when the contractor folds and leaves the park worse off?

  3. That’s retarded. They should be able to work on part of the park while keeping most of it open. It’s not like they had to close down Valencia entirely to do all of the recent construction there.

  4. Some updates from the dolo park blog: construction will begin on the playground first, which is being handled as a separate project. They quote a Parks and Rec person as saying that due to this separation of projects, the park may not need to be entirely closed in 2011 when the next phase of renovations kick in.
