There’s a new place to get your new bag in The Mission. Former Chrome bagmakers (bagsmiths?) have opened their own bageria, Mission Workshop, located right down the alley from Esta Noche.
They design their bags (and jackets, coming soon) right there in the ol’ warehouse, and have them manufactured in the U. S. of A. Colorado, I believe. Anyway, the bags are big and cool looking and weatherproof and seem expensive but are probably somewhat reasonable. $275ish? $239? For made in USA? And hardy? I dunno. I’m not that picky about apparel.
The coolest thing to me is that they’re planning monthly art shows, film screenings, and/or BBQ’s. In fact, this Thursday (7/15) they’re having a free BBQ and beer bash from your afterwork time to the late evening time (“happy hour time”). Plus art from Nate Smith and Caleb Sheridan. Should be sweet.
As a side note, doesn’t it seem like our neighborhood is racking up quite a list of logos and products/companies bearing it’s name? Is someone keeping a list? It’s rivaling my home town in its bumper sticker visibility.

275 for a bag seems insane to me, but all the cool kids are doing it so I guess it’s reasonable.
It’s actually $239 for the most expensive bag less the waist belt. And if you have an SFBC card, there is a discount. It’s about on par with other bag companies. If $240 is too much, don’t buy it.
I commute with mine and it’s the best investment I’ve made lately since it makes carrying stuff far easier than my old Timbuk2 and it’s more versatile.
That’s cool, if it works for you it’s clearly worth it.
the art show / bbq / keg is free. the gear is not cheap but the design is the best i know of.
The designers told me the bags were originally constructed for bike messengers as a tool for their trade. Great shop, space, concept and great grab on a great business name.
I bet you can get the same functionality for like $20.
Over 10 years? The bag I have now is going on 9 years old this fall. It’s not the same brand, but most of these bag makers (Chrome, Timbuk2, etc.) charge what they charge because of the quality of the materials used. A good bag will last a very, very long time.
Timbuk2 is crap nowadays. Chrome is heading that direction too.
There’s an economic theory that rich people spend less money than poor people on many goods, because rich people can afford to buy something that will last a lifetime, whereas poor folks are pretty much stuck buying disposable junk at Wal-Mart.
If a quality bag really lasts 10 years and costs $240, that’s the same price as a bag that lasts 1 year and costs $24. Or possibly less, since you’re wasting less time shopping (and getting a free beer out of it.)
