The Pros and Cons of Leaving the Mission

Rick here has lived in the Mission for two years, and now he’s moving on, to some intersection called 17th and Clayton, and he’s made a list of the pros and cons of leaving the Mission behind. Here are the cons:

Things I’ll Miss About Living in the Mission (specifically 24th and Shotwell):

  • The 3 minute walk to BART
  • The 40 Taquerias (Papalote and Vallarta, in particular) and the number of dive bars (Mission Bar, Nap’s 3) within walking distance.
  • The $3 Four Lokos I can conveniently purchase at the corner.
  • The quick shot up to the top of Bernal Hill.
  • St. Francis Fountain down the street
  • The relative flatness of the Mission in general and being able to get anywhere in the area on my bike faster than a car.

Read on for the pros section, though you should know it begins with a Bébé’s Kids reference.

HInt: You’ll blow out your knees riding all the way up 17th. Better: ride 17th to Corbett to Clayton to 17th. Much easier.

  2. olu Says:

bebe’s kids huh? I guess pickanninies was too long to spell.

  3. Jules Says:

“Shotwell being quite possibly the narrowest two-way street in the City of San Francisco, yet people still treating it like a racetrack.”

Oh yeah, if we ever move off Shotwell I won’t miss this either. Once had our driver’s mirror shaved off so hard it was sitting on the sidewalk when we found it. Shot the damn thing completely over the hood.

the mission is the new marina with hipsters instead of yuppies.

    • Oakland Says:

yep, after 7 years in the mission (around the vicinity of 16th and Mission) I decided to pack it up and head over to Oakland last month. Got a place 3 times bigger for the same price, but I do miss the burritos.

      • dave Says:

I can relate. I miss the burritos too, but I miss the 3 dollar burritos, not the 6 dollar ones. Now that burritos are six dollars in the Mission, its last great feature is gone. It’s the Marina for 25 year old hipsters now.

      • rod Says:

if you are paying $6 for a burrito then you don’t know where to go and are part of the very group you are condemning.

    • tacotron Says:

I be livin near that Silver ave next month. lots of…guppies?

    • Matt Says:

No. It’s actually nothing like that.

  6. heather Says:

wow, i bet the mission is really going to miss this awesome purveyor of “twenty something wisdom.”

  7. sam Says:

How will the Mission recover from white flight? It thrives on yuppie airhead twenty somethings. what will happen now???

  8. jim Says:

Lol, all of the reasons he dislikes the Mission have to do with the people who were in the Mission before him.

This is the opposite of why most people leave the Mission now.
